Kauno Marios Regional Park

Kauno Marios Regional Park was established in 1992 to protect the unique landscape of the artificial lagoon. The establishment of the Kaunas Lagoon started in 1959, when the Neman River was dammed and water flooded the Rumšiškės settlement. Along the Lagoon shore, there are many historical, architectural and nature objects such as Pažaislis Camaldolese Monastery historical Architectural Complex (more information: http://www.visitlithuania.net/culture/museums/435-pazaislis-camaldolese-monastery), Lithuanian Folk Museum, Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant (the KHPP) and a yacht club. KHPP is the largest power plant in Lithuania using renewable resources. Annual production currently meets 4% of total energy consumed in Lithuania (over 40% of total energy generated from renewable resources). The Kaunas Marios Regional Park territory contains many outcrops, hill forts and valleys of unrivalled landscapes, the most favoured of which is the unique Juniper Valley in Arlaviškės settlement. Small Strict Nature Reserve “Dubrava” was founded in 1994 in order to protect the rare forest habitat, the exceptional coniferous stand and other valuable flora. The reserve occupies 120 ha area. ”The city of lakes” – so called Trakai – the historical capital of Lithuania was first mentioned in year 1377 in “Chronicle of New Prussia”. It is famous by Trakai Historical National Park with Trakai Island castle. Here stands not only the pride of this city but also of the whole Lithuania – the only castle in Eastern Europe built in the island. Vilnius Old Town is the UNESCO World Heritage area and it is among the largest historical centres in Europe. 2. Marcinkonys - Čepkeliai

Čepkeliai State Strict Nature Reserve belongs to NATURA 2000 territory. It is a part of the EU network of protected areas. Čepkeliai consists not only of the largest raised bog (an area of 5,858 hectares) in Lithuania, but also of is the unique among the lowland sedge bogs and black alder swamp, distinguished by dry Cladinoso-callunosa forest, bog islands and lakes. Large carnivores, wolves (Canis lupus L.) and lynx (Felis lynx L.), black grouse (Tetrao tetrix), Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) are permanent inhabitants of this area. The yellow lady’s slipper (Cypripedium parviflorum) and Eastern pasqueflower (Pulsatilla patens): these are only a few of the more than 4,000 species of animals and plants found in the area. We will demonstrate the territory that was assigned to the Institute of Forestry LAMMC for science and training (hereinafter MMMPV) on the ground of the Law on Hunting. The territory of state forests of the Telšiai regional branch situated in the Žemaitija National Park including 2 423.5 ha of forests, 717 ha of open lands and shrubs, 120.4 ha of water bodies and 2385.1 ha of lands closed to hunting.
The hunting grounds are assigned to establish the modern scientific and educational base of the wildlife management science, performing scientific research on animal and plant communities, biodiversity protection and its increase. Hunting grounds for science and education (hereinafter MMMPV) are managed and wildlife resources are used according to the valid legal acts and the integrated research programme of scientific and educational activity of the Institute of Forestry “Sustainable Use of Wildlife Resources for Protecting Biodiversity” and MMMPV Game Management Plan of the Institute of Forestry, implementing the model of forest and wildlife management on the protected territory in the context of biodiversity protection. The Programme ensures continuity of scientific research in wildlife management and its implementation in the MMMPV.
In addition, the excursion will provide the opportunity to cross green and hilly landscapes, visit historic medieval villages and taste local cuisine and the part of national heritage.
Speedy development processes of science and technologies, globalization of the world raises challenges to country and nation. That forces to look for the ways how to keep Lithuanian national individuality. Nowadays in modernizing world national heritage gives to nation originality and exclusivity.

The Curonian Spit is the UNESCO World Heritage area. During this trip participants will have opportunity to see cultural and historical part of this unique area. Visit to Nagliai strict nature reserve will be included to the program of excursion. This object is included to list of Natura2000. Natural habitats of European importance (the White Dunes, the Grey Dunes, Dune crowberry fields and Dune osier-beds) are objects under the reserve’s protection.
